Montserrat Monastery, Spain

The Montserrat Monastery is a historic Benedictine abbey set amongst unique rock formations that look like jagged fingers at the top of a mountain. Taking a taxi up the mountainside is full of twists and turns and feels as if you are ascending to the clouds. The abbey itself is nestled into the arm of the mountain, and the views of the valleys from above are breath-taking. Instead of a taxi ride, you can also take a yellow gondola to the top if you dare!

The inside of the abbey has beautiful frescos on the ceiling and the most ornate details in the woodwork. You’ll follow the line of tourists to visit "La Moreneta” which is an enshrined carving of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, which is the patron saint of Catalonia. This monastery was found in 1025 AD and still homes a small population of monks. You can also visit an onsite art gallery with various works from Spanish artists among others.
